Macau presents Woodcarvings of Religious Figures - Sept. 7

On September 7th, Macau presents us with some Religious Figure Carvings in Wood. This form of art has more than 100 years of history, being one of Macau's oldest traditional industries, and combines different carving techniques from China, Japan and Taiwan, making it very unique. In 2008, this manual skill was included in the second National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The 5 stamps include the following religious figures: Buddha, Na Tcha (a legendary figure for Chinese people, a protective god for children, and celebrated every year on May 18th), Kun Iam (one of the 8 Bodhisattvas in Buddhism), Tin Hau (a Goddess linked with the seas popular with fishermen and sailors) and, in the souvenir sheet, The Eight Immortals (based on a story about 8 ordinary people becoming immortals through self religious cultivation, dating back to before the Ming Dynasty).

No dia 7 de Setembro, os Correios de Macau apresentam algumas Esculturas de Ídolos Sagrados feitos em Madeira. Com mais de 100 anos de história, esta forma de arte é uma das mais antigas actividades tradicionais de Macau, e única, combinando técnicas de aplicação de China, Japão e Taiwan. Em 2008, esta preciosa arte popular local foi inscrita no segundo lote da Lista do Património Cultural Intangível da China.
Nos 5 selos da emissão estão representados os seguintes ídolos sagrados: Buda, Na Tcha (uma personagem lendária chinesa, deus protector de crianças, e celebrado anualmente no dia 18 de Maio), Kun Iam (um dos oito Bodisatvas budistas), Tin Hau (uma deusa ligada aos mares, popular com pescadores e marinheiros) e, no bloco, os Oito Imortais (baseado na história de 8 mortais que se tornam imortais de vários quadrantes sociais, datado de antes da Dinastia Ming).

Canada Post honors British child immigrants Sept. 1st

On September 1st, Canada Post honors the story of over 100,000 orphaned and abandoned British children who were sent to Canada by British churches and philanthropic organizations between 1869 and the years following the 2nd World War. With the objective of helping these children find a better life, many were accepted by Canadian families as a source of farm labour, domestic help, and, for the more fortunate, as children of their own. There were, of course, cases of abuse, neglection and overwork.
The stamp features an image of the SS Sardinian (one of the ships that crossed the Atlantic with children), a map symbolizing the journeys, a photograph of a child at work on a farm, and one of a newly arrived Home Child.

A 1 de Setembro Canada Post presta homenagem a mais de 100.000 crianças inglesas orfãs e abandonadas que foram enviadas para o Canadá por igrejas e organizações filantrópicas Inglesas entre 1869 e os anos a seguir à 2ª Guerra Mundial. Com o objectivo de proporcionar uma vida melhor a estas crianças, muitas foram aceites por famílias Canadianas como fonte de trabalho no campo, apoio doméstico, e, para os mais afortunados, como filhos deles. No entanto, houve vários casos de maus tratos, negligência e trabalho excessivo.

O selo destaca várias imagens desta história: uma imagem do SS Sardinian (um dos navios que atravessava o Atlântico com crianças), um mapa que simboliza as viagens, uma fotografia de uma criança a trabalhar no campo, e outra de uma criança recém chegada ao Canadá.

Four issues from UK in 2010

Here are some UK stamps from 2010. Royal Mail normally issues the stamps in sets of 10, sold in sheets of 10 a piece.

Aqui estão alguns dos selos do Reino Unido de 2010. Normalmente, a Royal Mail emite os selos em séries de 10, vendidos em folhas de 10 selos cada.

Jan. 26 - Smilers

Every year Royal Mail issues Smiler stamps, created in order to refresh the choice of customisable stamps available for use. The 2010 set includes 6 stamps for business (left side) and 4 for consumers (right side).

The themes of the business stamps include Transportation, Royalty (seal) and Remembrance (poppies). For consumers, there is a birthday cake and a gift, and 2 new airmail values for Europe and Worldwide.

Todos os anos a Royal Mail emite selos conhecidos pelo nome “Smilers” (sorridentes), criados com o objectivo de disponibilizar às pessoas uma escolha variada de selos para uso no dia-a-dia. Em 2010, a série incluí 6 selos para negócios (lado esquerdo) e 4 para consumidores (lado direito).

Os temas dos selos de negócios abrangem Transportes, Realeza (selo monárquico) e Lembrança (Poppies ou Papaverales). Para consumidores, existe um bolo de anos e uma prenda, e dois novos valores para correio aéreo para Europa e Mundo.

Feb. 25 - The Royal Society

A beautiful set that celebrates the Royal Society, which was founded in 1660 and has maintained its position at the leading edge of scientific discovery ever since. Included in the set are 10 leading scientists (left to right): Robert Boyle, founder of modern chemistry; Sir Issac Newton, physicist and optical pioneer; Benjamin Franklin, inventor of the lightning conductor; Edward Jenner, inventor of vaccination; Charles Babbage, developer of programmable computers; Alfred Russel Wallace, pioneer of evolution theory; Joseph Lister, inventor of antiseptic surgery; Ernest Rutherford, founding father of nuclear physics; Dorothy Hodgkin, pioneer of x-ray crystallography; and Sir Nicholas Shackleton, pioneer of climate research.

Mar. 11 - Battersea Dogs & Cats

The Battersea Dogs & Cats home is UK's oldest and most famous home for these furry little animals. It was established in 1860, and has been rescuing and re-homing tens of thousands of dogs and cats during its 150 years of existence.

The set features 10 cute little animals that stayed in Battersea until being re-homed (left to right): Pixie, brought in as a stray, 2 weeks later she had a new home; Button, a 5-year-old ginger tom; Herbie, a mongrel; Mr. Tumnus, who was born in Battersea with his 2 sisters; Tafka, a Border Collie; Boris, the Bulldog; Casey, the Lurcher; Tigger, who was brought in after his owner passed away; Leonard, another frightened and underweight stray; and Tia, a fun little Terrier.

A Casa de Cães & Gatos de Battersea é a casa mais antiga e famosa do Reino Unido para estes pequenos animais peludos. Foi criada em 1860, e durante os seus 150 anos de vida esta instituição tem estado a resgatar e a devolver a novos donos milhares de cães e gatos abandonados.

Jan. 19 - Marianne Solidarité Haiti

A special issue of the Marianne definitive stamps in support of Haiti, the Caribbean country that was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010.

Mar. 29 - Rattachement de la Savoie à la France - Traité de Turin 1860

Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Turin, by which the Duchy of Savoy and the County of Nice were annexed to France. It was another one of Napoleon's conquests, as he won these 2 territories in exchange of his support for Piedmont's aim to unify Italy.

Comemoram-se os 150 anos da assinatura do Tratado de Torino, através do qual a Saboia e Nice passaram a fazer parte de França. Foi mais uma das conquistas de Napoleão. Em troca da cessão dos territórios, Napoleão apoiou a Sardenha nas suas tentativas de unificar a Itália.

April 26 - Colmar

In 2010, the city of Colmar, in Alsace, hosted the Spring Stamp Festival. On the stamp 2 landmarks of the city are displayed: on the left, "La Petite Venise", an area with many canals; on the right, the Maison des Têtes, German Renaissance architecture, from 1609.

O selo apresenta 2 lugares emblemáticos da cidade: à esquerda, "La Petite Venise", uma área com vários canais; a direita, a Maison des Têtes, um edifício de 1609 de estilo arquitectónico Renascentista Germânico.

May 15 - Europa - Les Livres pour Enfants

In France's contribution to the 2010 Europa theme, we have a colorful stamp with a young girl sitting on a pile of books while reading. And in the background, we have a number of images from French children's books: Cinderella (Cendrillon), Beauty and the Beast (la Belle et la Bête), and la Chèvre de monsieur Seguin of Alphonse Daudet (Mr. Segiun's Goat).

A contribuição francesa para o tema dos selos Europa de 2010 traz-nos um selo colorido com uma menina, em primeiro plano, sentada em cima de uma pilha de livros a ler. Depois, no fundo, temos várias imagens de personagens de livros infantis franceses: Cinderella (Cendrillon), a Bela e o Monstro (la Belle et la Bête), e la Chèvre de monsieur Seguin de Alphonse Daudet (O Bode do Senhor Seguin).

May 17 - La Piscine - Roubaix

The Art and Industrial Museum of Roubaix has long been known as "La Piscine", since a swimming pool has existed in the midst of this museum since the 1920s, designed by Albert Baert. In 1985, the pool was closed and the museum remodelled by Jean-Paul Philippon, re-opening in 2000. 

The museum contains numerous works of art applied to industry and collections from the 19th and 20th centuries.

O Museu de Arte e Indústria de Roubaix é conhecido há muito tempo simplesmente como "La Piscine", pois existe uma piscina no meio do museu desde os anos 20, construída por Albert Baert. Em 1985, a piscina foi fechada e o museu foi remodelado por Jean-Paul Philippon, reabrindo em 2000.

O museu contém várias obras de arte relacionados com indústria e também colecções dos séculos XIX e XX.

May 17 - Basilique d'Orcival

Orcival is a small village in Puy-de-Dôme about 30 kms from Clermont-Ferrand. It is renowned for its Basilica, a wonderful sample of roman architecture in Auvergne, whose construction started way back in the 12th century and completed in 1166.

Macau and Aland celebrate Church Windows together August 30

In a joint issue, Macau and Aland celebrate Church Windows. The first windows were found in France, Germany and the UK in the 12th century, and their main objective was to explain the stories of the church to the illiterate followers.

For Macau, the windows of St. Lawrence Church was chosen. These were donated by church members when the church was built in the 1560s (it has been rebuilt and renovated many times since) and their names are engraved on each church window. Macau's stamp shows the moment when St. Lawrence received his appointment as Deacon from Pope St. Sixtus II.
For Aland, St. Olaf's Church was chosen. Located in Jomala, the church, one of the oldest remaining stone versions in Scandinavia, was built in the 13th century and is dedicated to Aland's patron saint Olaf. The Aland stamp depicts a window with an image of Saint Olaf, unveiled in 1968.

Neste emissão conjunta, Macau e Alanda celebram Vitrais de Igreja. Os primeiros vitrais datam do século XII em França, Alemanha e Reino Unido, e o seu principal objectivo era narrar as histórias da igreja aos crentes menos literados.
Para Macau, os Vitrais da Igreja de São Lourenço foram escolhidos. Eles foram doados por católicos locais quando a igreja foi construída na década de 1560 (foi reconstruída e renovada várias vezes desde essa data) e em cada vitral tem inscrito o nome do respectivo doador. O selo de Macau ilustra o momento em que São Lourenço foi ordenado como diácono, pelo Papa São Sisto II.
Para Alanda, a Igreja de Santo Olavo foi a escolhida. Esta igreja, localizada em Jomala e dedicada a Santo Olavo, padroeiro de Aland, foi construída no século XIII. É também um das mais antigas igrejas em pedra na Escandinávia. No selo de Alanda está um vitral com a imagem de Santo Olavo, inaugurado em 1968.

Celebration of Forests in the Netherlands on August 17th

On August 17th, TNT celebrates the forest in this issue entitled "Long Live the Forest", as the Royal Dutch Forestry Society (KNBV) celebrates its 100th year. This association for professionals in Dutch forestry aims at bringing together the different actors in forest management to ensure that the functions and values of forests are maintained and shared.

The slogan of this anniversary is exactly "Lang leve hat bos!", Long Live the Forest, the name of this issue.

At the same time, TNT commemorates the link between the Netherlands and Suriname, and this South American nation is also well-known for its large tropical forests.

In the Netherlands, 10% of the land mass is forests.

A 17 de Agosto, os correios da Holanda celebram as florestas com esta emissão entitulada "Viva a Floresta", ao mesmo tempo que a Sociedade Real das Florestas da Holanda (KNBV) celebra o seu centenário. Esta associação de profissionais florestais holandeses visa juntar os diferentes intervenientes na gestão florestal de modo a assegurar que as funções e valores da floresta são mantidas e partilhadas.

O slogan do aniversário desta associação é precisamente "Lang leve hat bos", Viva a Floresta, o nome desta emissão.

Ao mesmo tempo, os correios comemoram a ligação entre Holanda e Suriname, esta nação sul-americana conhecida pelas suas grandes florestas tropicais.

Swedish Crime Novellists out to solve mysteries on Aug. 26

Here we have a celebration of Swedish crime novelists. The 5 authors chosen for this set are:

- Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, who inspire their writing in American novelists, are famous for their 10 novels centered on Martin Beck, and one of their books, The Laughing Policeman (1968), won awards and was adapted to the big screen with Walter Matthau starring in it;

- Henning Mankell, one of the pioneers of the new wave of the 90s, with his main character being Kurt Wallander (10 books in the series);

- Liza Marklund, who has won numerous rewards with crime novels featuring crime reporter Annika Bengtzon;

- Hakan Nesser, who has written many stories, initially centered around detective Van Veeteren and, since 2006, Inspector Gunnar Barbarotti; and

- Stieg Larsson (1954-2004), with his remarkable leading character, Lisbeth Solander, from the world famous Millenium series.
